Deer season is approaching and this will be my first year going (I've only gone for Turkey in the past). Luckily I won't need to buy a rifle as my uncle has spares - and hunting a deer with my AR would be a terrible idea.
Dropped coin on some cold weather outers and the 19 year old 5 lb fury known as Storm decided to claim them as her own.
that being said my wallet hurts and I still need to buy boots

You can totally hunt deer with an AR (if allowed). Using a good bullet type helps too, like a heavier grain Barnes TSX or Sierra Match King. Although in the end it depends on your barrel twist and if the rifle likes it.

What part of the country are you hunting in? It is legal in most states to hunt with a 5.56/.223 caliber bullet. However, you need to be a good a shot, those bullets don't cause a lot of collateral damage compared to a 30-06 or 7mm mag.
Oh and speaking from experience, don't skimp on the boots. You will get what you pay for. A good pair should last you a very long time.

I've thought about it but think I'd be more comfortable sending a heavier round down range (most everyone up there uses .308 or .30-06).
Plus I'd need to invest in a solid scope as well and by that time I'd probably just invest in my own hunting rifle to add to my surplus of guns and ever growing FBI / NSA watch list.

upstate New York. They're already sketchy enough as is when it comes to guns. Just bringing my AR up last time I had to buy 10rd mags for it and leave all my side arms at home.
It's heavy wilderness/mountainside so most of the brush will be dead but it's still going to be thick up there. That's why I think I'm avoiding the 223 since my biggest fear is maiming without killing.

What caliber are you borrowing? or you could always throw slugs in your turkey gun.

they have a .308 and 30-06 on standby currently. Though the 30-06 may be a 30-30 actually.
